Following a campaign against this, it dropped its numeral but retained the title ‘The King’s Own Borderers’. In , on becoming the county regiment for four south-eastern Scottish counties, it added ‘Scottish’ to its name. From to , 1st Battalion was fighting in the Boer War (). The King's Own Scottish Borderers is one of only two Scottish regiments never to have been amalgamated until it joined forces with The Royal Scots to form the 1st battalion of The Royal Regiment of Scotland in It is also unusual in that it lost its Scottish status between and when it served as the 25th (Sussex) Regiment of in Edinburgh in , its first operational. The King's Own Scottish Borderers - Actions against the French Navy: "Glorious First of June" and the capture of two French ships, 14th March (Regiment serving as marines.). The Regiment was created in as a crisis measure for the defence of Edinburgh against the Jacobites. The Regiment was recruited “by beat of drum” along the Royal Mile (the High Street in the Old Town) of the City of Edinburgh in the record time of two hours with men flocking to join the Earl of Leven to safeguard their city.
